Transience

Having found my SteelPan (or SteelDrum) solo from a concert on 8th May 2002 ten years after it was recorded I'd like to dedicate this piece and the images to Wojtek Sówka - wonderful person and a great SteelDrum maker, who's just recently been called to make a steelband in some other state of existence.

"Fantasy on a Theme of Morawski" Trailer

The movie was selected for Camerimage 2011 and had it's premiere on the Festival.

It tells a story of a forgotten, yet congenial Polish composer Eugeniusz Morawski (1876-1948).

His works that we can perform today are just remnants. All the rest (about 80% of the heritage!) burnt in the fire of Warsaw Uprising 1944.

In 2011 Monika Wolińska, hearing the only 1970's recording of Morawski in a radio decided to re-record and publish his music for the very first time ever. She performed Morawski's 3 symhonic poems with Sinfonia Varsovia. These are amazing masterpieces of orchestral music and it's even more surprising, how such a thing could have disappeared from people's memory.

The remaining music of Morawski, very reach and emotional, indeed a "film-like", was composed mostly beween 1910 and 1920 in Paris, where Morawski lived for over 20 years. It consists of 3 symphonic poems and 2 ballets, some songs and the rest... piano conertos, symphonies, other symphonic poems, quartets etc. - is most probably irreversibly gone.

The album with the music and the film on DVD will be released in April 2012.
Thank you very much to all those involved.

Memory of the last winter

Last winter we went with Patryk to the lakes. Two days off everything: our women, children and work. We wandered around, slept in a hidden hut in the middle of a forest.

On the second day we took camera and went for a walk. When we walked out on a frozen lake there was stillness. We talked only about the most important things.

And then the storm started. I just kept my camera on.

Patryk is a great composer and I'm still waiting for his music to come to this miniature. For now, to celebrate the first snow in Poland this season - a piece of Madredeus. I just can't keep this still in my drawer.

"Fantasy on a Theme of Morawski" Screening on Tuesday, Camerimage 2011

The documentary about the amazing, and long forgotten composer Eugeniusz Morawski (1876-1948) will have it's premiere on CAMERIMAGE 2011, at the Festival Centre, Tuesday 22.15, Documentary Screening Room, Opera NovaBydgoszcz.

Morawski's three works were recently recorded by Monika Wolinska conductiing Sinfonia Varsovia. The three symphonic poems are beautiful, emotional pieces composed some 100 years ago, although they sound very modern and very film-like. They are inspiring and the film consists of interviews interwoven with memory-like images composed to excerpts of the music.

The Film as descripted on Camerimage website is HERE.

Navegadores - 4 Elements in Ethiopia - The Movie

One of Navegadores cars and a bus carrying benches for a school hidden deep in the mountains.
Even though it is hard to believe from what we're used to hear and read, Ethiopia, suffering with droughts and lack of water, has incredible richness of underground springs.

Navegadores Society, an organization founded by Piotr Wikarek, among 3 other tasks, has set it's first goal to combine the richness of water with the richness of the sun energy in the Mission of Alemtena. Last draught the Mission was deprived of fresh water for about three months.

A group of 12 people was followed by a film crew: Sebastian Mucha as Sound Recordist and additional Cameraman, Marta Wierzbicka as Production Manager and 3rd camera. The film Directors: Miguel Gaudencio and Maciej Puczyński. Director of Photography was Maciej Puczyński.

Piotr, the Founder of Navegadores Society on the spot with preparatory works, supported by Tomasz, Kuba and Inka.
The uniqueness of the Navegadores is that the sponsors go for the journey and work themselves on the spot.

Sister Judyta watching the progress of the works.
The Sisters in Alemtena live their simple and devoted lives having for themselves only the most necessary things. They lead a school, a clinic and they serve any current need of their surroundings.

Mounting the solars for the water pump.
Unseen richness of fresh water.
